"3 Body Problem" on Netflix
Predictive Programming or Wishful Thinking? I Decode the Messaging.
I watched the first season (?) of this Netflix series due to the recommendation of somebody I interact with online. I have not read the books and likely never will.
What It's About:
Humanity has 400 years to prepare for an alien invasion. Meanwhile, the more advanced aliens are spying on us, manipulating us, and turning our neighbors into sleeper agents and assassins, so that our technology can't advance to the point that it will be a fair fight by the time they get here.
What follows contains what could be considered spoilers.
The story begins with several top scientists committing suicide (or being assassinated by a killer who is invisible to surveillance cameras).
It turns out that the aliens (the Sang-Ti) are killing off the scientists in order to hinder our scientific progress. And they're doing this even before they have decided human beings are a threat.
The Sang-Ti do later decide we're a threat, because we can lie and deceive while they, supposedly, cannot. (This premise is a little weak, considering some plot developments--like equipping scientists with headsets to ostensibly play an educational virtual reality game. It's actually a Trojan Horse, allowing the Sang-Ti to manipulate their minds into seeking suicide, or somehow becoming vulnerable to assassination in a seemingly paranormal fashion.)
To meet this threat, the Great Minds of Earth decide to send a space probe out to meet the Sang-Ti fleet before it gets here. This is going to allow us to learn our enemy's weaknesses, we are told. The probe contains a cyrogenically preserved human brain. The plan appears to be that the Sang-Ti will capture the brain, learn about our species by studying it, then decide to genetically engineer a body for it to occupy. Seems like a string of bizarre assumptions to me. Even weaker is the idea that this human brain is going to be allowed (by a species afraid of us because we are lying deceivers) to report back to us about their weaknesses. So the human brain/probe is our own Trojan Horse for them.
We are constantly reminded that these characters are geniuses. Yet that is their brilliant plan to counter an existential threat.
Anyway, to accomplish all of this quickly enough to give us adequate time to prepare for the attack of the Sang-Ti, the probe has to travel at 1% of light speed, using existing technology. The solution is to attach a "radiation sail" to the probe, then accelerate it through space via a series of atomic explosions, the shock waves of which will be caught by the sail and propel it up to 1% of light speed.
Technical Advisor Needed:
The radiation sail (which looks a lot like a parachute) is attached to the space probe by cables. The nuclear warheads are detonated after the sail has passed, but before the probe has. In other words, "ground zero" of these multiple atomic blasts is right where the suspension lines are extended between the sail and the probe. I guess it never occurred to these wickedsmart scientists that an atomic explosion just might overstress the connection from the sail to the probe.
An Interesting Feature:
The very first scene in the movie is a humiliation ritual in Red China during the mid-'60s, in which a primary character's father is beaten to death for teaching science in a way that challenges the official narratives of the CCP.
Something strange is afoot in Homowood, Commiefornia, when a piece of entertainment reveals a truth (however small) that the cultural svengalis have spent 80 years suppressing. "Wait...you mean Marxist regimes are not actually worker's paradise? You mean it doesn’t turn out well when people are stripped of essential liberties and smooth-talking socialists are given absolute power?"
Chairman Mao (and the CCP he established) is the most prolific mass murderer in recorded history and yes, the kind of stuff you see in this scene is one way the CCP crushes dissent. But previously, we were supposed to believe the Tiananmen Square Massacre was the only time the communists were anything but benevolent masters. They were kindly prole comrades deeply concerned about human rights when international camera crews were not present to record events inside mainland China, you see. Otherwise, the people under that regime are just as content as can be with how they're treated.
This fits a pattern of other evidence in recent years suggesting that GloboHomo has suffered a falling-out with the CCP. Now that Red China has been built into a superpower by generations of treasonous US politicians, it is powerful enough to spurn the Cabal and bite the hand that fed it.
So GloboHomo is willing to let some truth slip through new cracks. But you can be sure what does slip through will be spun into the same old fake "But that wasn't real socialism!" caveat. Remember: their Cabal forbears have been using some form of this tactic from the beginning. Americans were told Chairman Mao and his PLA weren't really communists, but merely "agrarian reformers," as justification to betray the Chinese nationalists and sentence the Chinese people to enslavement in the first place.
Once in a while, folks like RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard make a profound observation or at least say something that’s honest. That doesn’t mean you should believe everything they say or agree with all their proposals.
Decoding the Narrative:
That first scene has probably convinced many that this is not just another cultural Marxist narrative. Well, consider the following:
With two exceptions at most, only female and non-white characters are sympathetic, while white males are the problem--or at least the biggest part of it. Not only are the "good" characters female/Asian/Hispanic/black, but they are also demonstrably smarter than anyone/everyone else.
In this intellectual elite, two white males are initially included in the clique. One dropped out of the scientific community (intellectually inadequate to keep up with the others, plus too selfish) and started a business instead, becoming a rich, fat, capitalist white male. Would you be shocked if I told you he is the most arrogant, assholiest member of the clique?
There is one decent human being who happens to be a white heterosexual male...and he is dying off as the story begins. No metaphor to see here, folks.
The “good” white male is, self-admittedly, intellectually inferior to his diversity-hire peers. As cancer eats him from the inside, he goes to his death harboring unrequited love for one of the (intellectually superior) Asian female leads. And just like an obedient dog, it is his unfailing devotion to her that motivates him to volunteer for the space probe mission--not solidarity with the human race, and certainly not her Diabolical Old White Male boss.
There is a minor league Diabolical Old White Male whom the Hispanic female lead works for, initially. She, being good, altruistic, compassionate and selfless, wants to use the technology she developed to help the world. Saving poor Mexicans from contaminated water and such, for instance. He, being, y'know, a white male, wants to profit from her hard work, appropriating it for himself and his greedy capitalist corporation. Boy, does she own him, in a scene that might just get replayed to standing ovations at the Emmies and Golden Globes! Go grrrrl!
It’s almost as epic as when some toxic male tries to pick up our heroines in a bar and they intimidate him away by owning him with their scientific credentials! It would have been the typical scene for him to attempt some form of assault, only for one of the kickass grrrlbosses to beat up him along with the entire local rugby team for good measure. For whatever reason, the filmmakers showed restraint.
D.E.I. narratives are hardly unusual. The religious messaging is nothing new, either.
The highly advanced species of conquerors on their way to Earth have fanatic disciples among us, who refer to the alien voice they interact with as "the Lord." They yearn for the far-off apocalyptic Judgment Day which will see all the naughty sinners of the human race wiped out.
In fact, it was a sort of "prayer" that invited the Sang-Ti to come and conquer Earth which catalyzed this looming conflict. The daughter of the murdered Chinese school teacher (from the opening scene) communicated with them back in the '60s, out of her desire to see the human race judged by a superior being.
Yes, this whole deal with the Sang-Ti is a caricature of Christianity. Those who welcome the Sang-Ti are stand-ins for Bible-thumpers, of course.
Right before he's sliced to death, yet another Diabolical Old White Man drops to his knees and asks his "Lord" for forgiveness. But since the stand-in for the God of the Bible is a detached, non-empathetic genocidal maniac, you see, it abandons this loyal follower to his fate. Because the Diabolical Old White Man has served his purpose and is now disposable. BTW, he and his followers was riding a ship named "Judgment Day" when the ship and everyone aboard is sliced to pieces by Almighty Science. There's more than one interpretation of this parable, but they are all thematically linked.
The term Sang-Ti is an interesting choice of name for the entity called "Lord" by the intellectually inferior Earthlings . Very similar to the name Shangdi, which Chinese (Evangelical) Christians use to identify our Creator.
The Competency of the Propagandists:
The cultural svengalis have really had their work cut out for them. In order to destroy the family, the Church, America and the West, they've had to push some ridiculous narratives.
(First there was nothing, then it exploded. The Colorado River flowed uphill so it could carve out the Grand Canyon. Refrigerants which are heavier than air pose a grave threat to the O-Zone. Mother Earth (“the environment”) is only damaged when American-owned companies manufacture products in America, using American labor. Gender is just a social construct. Biological males can get pregnant. The way to fight crime is to defund the police, refuse to punish criminals, and disarm their victims. We're so confident that the 2020 Selection was so totally legit that we must censor anybody asking uncomfortable questions, suppress evidence, and persecute whistleblowers.)
Considering the laughable logic behind the spurious messages they are tasked with spreading, it's impressive how successful they've been at getting so many to swallow it hook, line, and sinker.
Apologists for emotional reasoning produce movies like Pleasantville and Equilibrium, which want you to fear a society which is more difficult to control through the manipulation of feelings.
Then we have The Invention of Lying, which warns you how boring our world would be without liars (who are conflated with imaginative creators/artists).
In 3 Body Problem, the task the filmmakers have bit off is to convince you that liars and deceivers (which is how they have chosen to define humanity) don't deserve judgment, therefore should unite with others across the globe and fight to avoid Judgment Day.
Similar to something predicted thousands of years ago:
Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.” (Psalm 2:1-3)
And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against Him who was sitting on the horse and against His army. (Revelation 19:19)
He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the LORD holds them in derision. (Psalm 2:4)
Not all sci-fi is anti-American or anti-Christian. You can read chapters from the first book in the Paradox Series for free right here on Substack!
I did read all 3 books after watching the show, in part to compare and in part to see how well they adapted it. And there are parts better than the books (the opening, the ship/wire, and even some of the VR), but you nailed it: it's taken a book with flaws (written by a Chinese who has it most of it happening in China, and a mostly Chinese set of characters) and filled it with DEI and worse.
Not to rip it all down, but most importantly: the main females are directly responsible in the books for EVERY bad thing, from Aliens finding the Earth (in TV show), to (spoilers!!!), Concentration Camps for all Earthlings, and eventually the descruction of the entire solar solar system. In the meantime, the strong based male figures (the 4 left intact in the TV series) are directly responsible for saving mankind and/or would have done better if only the women hadn't been allowed to interfere.
In other words, Season 2 and beyond will either require those men to be the heroes, or more likely they will rewrite more to shift the blame.
I'm seriously considering canceling my Netflix subscription. With really no exception, they've made it abundantly clear that they hate me and everyone who looks like me.
